  5. Acornet is a suite of software which will allow you to use the Internet.  It
  6. is not a single application, but a convenient meshing together of a number of
  7. applications written by many people.  The Help file (see below) contains full
  8. details.
  9.  
  10. Licence
  11. -------
  12. Generally the applications comprising Acornet are Freeware: that is, they may
  13. be freely distributed in their original form so long as no charge (other than
  14. nominal cost of media and carriage) is made, but the copyright remains with
  15. the authors.  But see the documentation on each application for precise terms
  16. and conditions.

  18. The Acornet collection as a whole is 'CiderWare', which is a super-set of
  19. 'FreeWare'. All the conditions of FreeWare apply, but with the added
  20. stipulation that if you bump into the original author (Phillip Temple) in a
  21. pub, you are obligated to buy him a decent pint of Scrumpy. Should Scrumpy
  22. not be availably, a suitable decent dry cider may be substituted instead.

  24. The software is provided in the hope that it will be useful, but without any
  25. warranty of any kind.
  26.  
  27. Requirements
  28. ------------
  29. RISC OS 3.10 or greater.
  30. Probably 4Mb RAM.
  31. A hard disk with ~10Mb free (about 4Mb for initial installation, then to
  32. allow space for news, email and Web cache).
  33. A modem.
  34. An account with an Internet Service Provider (e.g. Demon) which allows access
  35. via a dial-up SLIP link.  (Note: there is a Shareware PPP driver available
  36. for use with FreeNet, written by Sergio Monesi, but it is not included in
  37. this version of Acornet.)

  39. Installation
  40. ------------
  41. You should have received Acornet either as a single Spark archive or as a set
  42. of four archives.  If a single archive, unpack its contents into a directory
  43. (folder) on your hard disk.  If a set of archives, unpack the contents of all
  44. the archives into the same directory on your hard disk, thus merging together
  45. the contents of the !Acornet application directories from each archive.
  46. It is recommended that you use either the root directory or a first level
  47. subdirectory.  This is because Acornet and its component applications use
  48. many levels of directory, and if the full filenames so generated are too long
  49. it may cause problems.

  51. If you have received Acornet as a multi-part archive (e.g. split over a
  52. number of floppy disks), extract the contents of each archive into the same
  53. directory to merge the parts together.
  54.  
  55. Updating your System folder
  56. ---------------------------
  57. Run the SysMerge application.  Drag your existing !System into the window,
  58. followed by the !System which you extracted from the Acornet archive.
  59.  
  60. Note: If your machine is fitted with RISC OS 3.50 or later (e.g. a Risc PC or
  61. A7000), your master !System folder is found inside the !Boot application. 
  62. Do a SHIFT double-click SELECT on !Boot to open it as a Filer window and then
  63. double-click on the Resources folder to open that; inside you will find
  64. !System.  The System update feature of the built-in Configure utility, which
  65. normally runs when you double-click on !Boot, is faulty and will not perform
  66. the update correctly.

  68. Once you have updated your !System, you must SHUT DOWN and RESTART the
  69. machine in order to kill any old versions of modules which may be in memory. 
  70. If you don't, things may not work as expected, and may even cause the machine
  71. to lock up.

  73. Help information
  74. ----------------
  75. Information on various aspects of Acornet may be obtained by clicking MENU
  76. over the !Acornet application and selecting the App.'!Acornet'⇨Help menu item.
  77. When Acornet is running, the help can also be accessed from the 'i' icon on
  78. the control panel.
  79.  
  80. Setting up
  81. ----------
  82. Double-click on the !Acornet application.  After few seconds of
  83. initialisation, you will be put straight into the configuration utility,
  84. NetConfig.  Follow the instructions to supply the various details as
  85. required.  (When you have done this set-up, on future occasions, running the
  86. application will launch you straight into Acornet itself.)
